Started racing in 1991 in USA riding in the 600, 750 and 250 classes and winning every race finished. This great debut allowed to grab official Yamaha team bike in 1992 and finish season as national champion, wining first professional race in Daytona.
In 1993, moved to AMA Superbike championship and finished 6th. In 1994 won 3 races in AMA SBK championship and finished season sixth overall. Entered World Superbike championship in 1995 with factory Yamaha team and finished season as 11th. Was better in 1996, finished season 5th and won Suzuka 8 hour race. Because of injury in 1997, lost most of the season and finished season 12th. Progress started in 1998, finished season 5th with Castrol Honda Team. Next season was even better, took 2nd World Superbike championship position. In 2000, took World Superbike Championship title aboard HondaVTR 1000 (RC51). Unable to defend title in 1991, finished second in World Superbike Championship, but title was re taken in 1992 won it in last race with one point advantage.
