Started racing on 125cc bikes in Texas as a teenager. In late 2000 qualified on the front row for debut in the AMA Supersport Championship series. For the next 2 years primarily raced Superstock, although troubled by a knee injury. Then joined the professional motorcycle road racer who turned pro in 2000. Won the AMA Superbike Championship in 2006 (only the second time since 1999 that Mat Mladin had not won it). Took six successive wins early in the 2006 season, and staved off a late season surge by Mladin to win the title by 649 points to 641. In total took 7 poles and 17 podiums. In 2007, won the championship over Mladin by a single point.
